Brett Aggregates has recently opened a new marine aggregates terminal at Newhaven Port with access to over 50mt of consented marine aggregate licence capacity.

The site is located on the South Coast of the UK, close to the marine licences in the English Channel and the Isle of Wight and is capable of receiving 10,000t cargo dredgers. The site is now receiving material from a range of vessels such as Brett Group vessel the mv Britannia Beaver and the Charlemagne, Melina and Victor Horta from Brett Groups dredging partner, Deme Building Materials Ltd.

This new terminal is good news for East Sussex as Oliver Brown, Development Director for the Brett Group explains, “Construction materials are important to the local economy and some 1.4 million tonnes of sand and gravel are required by East Sussex each year to meet construction demand. This Brett investment means that aggregates can now be brought into the heart of the market rather than using lorries to bring materials into the county and significantly strengthens the aggregate supply base for East Sussex, which is increasingly reliant on marine (as opposed to land-based) aggregates.”

Ship

Tom Longland, Managing Director of Brett Aggregates commented, “This is very good news for customers, not only locally but we have also reinstated and significantly expanded the rail connection, enabling aggregates to be exported by rail to meet construction demand in London. The first fully loaded train of aggregates left the site on Thursday 18th June bound for Capital Concrete’s Wembley batching plant”.

"The effort by everyone on site to make the marine aggregates terminal fully operational has been tremendous, and we have built up a great working relationship with the teams at Newhaven Port, Network Rail and DB Cargo – this is a great result for everyone”.

"Together with Brett marine aggregate terminals at Cliffe in Kent and Ipswich in Suffolk this significantly strengthens Brett marine aggregate rail capability and provides rail-linked terminals close to the marine licence areas of the East Coast, Thames, and English Channel.”

Establishment works at the Newhaven Port site were completed in June 2020 and include a bespoke aggregate processing plant manufactured by Atherton Materials Handling and incorporating state of the art processing components and design to significantly minimise noise generated by the activity.

The new long-term Brett Aggregate facility at Newhaven Port will enable demand for construction materials to be met for future generations.

Train

Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd welcomes Brett Aggregates to Newhaven Port and are delighted to see freight trains once again running through the Port. Historically, Newhaven had a network of rail track servicing the quays and land at both East and North Quays, distributing the cargoes brought in by ship. To see once again, the ships bringing in the cargo, the cargo being processed and then loaded onto freight trains for delivery within the south east is a wonderful sight. In this age of essential environmental consideration, Newhaven Port is pleased and proud to be part of the greener transport sector and economy.
