Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd, the statutory Harbour Authority for Newhaven, are delighted to announce that their on-going programme of works to improve the facilities for the Newhaven Fishermen, has resulted in the opening of Fishing Stage 16 on Saturday 15th June 2013.
Stage 16 fell into dis-repair a number of years ago and was very nearly demolished. However, the management team at the Port saw the potential to bring it back to life and re-use.
After going through a thorough tender process and assignment of budget funds, Haven Home Construction were contracted to carry out the re-furbishment using a method unique to them to keep the costs to a minimum whilst providing a quality structure.
Haven Home Construction Ltd are a relatively newly formed Newhaven company who have proved they are capable of designing and undertaking works that are not your typical “run of the mill” projects. They are committed to only employing local labour and using local suppliers of materials and so were delighted to have won the contract to work for Newhaven Port for the benefit of Newhaven Fishermen and therefore the socio-economic benefit of the town as a whole. However, the work doesn’t stop there! The Port was so delighted with the result that they have contracted “Haven” to refurbish Fishing Stage 13 using the same techniques as on Stage 16. Work will commence on or around 1st July 2013.
The result of these improvement works is that not only are the working and safety conditions improved for the fishermen, but up to 4 new berths have been created, which is good news for everyone.
It is hoped that further improvement works can be carried out to the remaining fishing stages in the harbour over a period of time and within budget restraints.
