Vacancy for Port Control Officer/Duty Officer

Starting salary £30k, rising to £35k*
(*On successful completion of training and obtaining NVQ level 2 in Port Operations.)

Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd are seeking a Port Control Officer / Duty Officer. This position involves a dual role of alternating between Port Control Officer and Duty Officer, as shifts and circumstances dictate.

The Port Control is the hub of the port, a 24 hour operation that oversees the daily port operations and operates at the highest levels of an LPS (Local Port Service).

Duties of the role include:

  • Overseeing the day to day port operations directing vessels and port users
  • Facilitating the safe operation of the port
  • Ensure that the Harbour Byelaws, directions and legislation are upheld
  • Acting as vessel Berthing Officers
  • Supporting the Pilot Boat team as required
  • Interpreting data and communicating information to Port Users
  • Maintaining records
  • Team working
  • Liaison with the Port Users, Coastguard, RNLI, Emergency Services, Border Force

Covering either role of Port Control Officer or as Duty Officer, the working rostered hours will include working 4 on /4 off on day and night shifts, weekends and bank holidays.

To be successful in this role you must have good numeracy and literacy skills. In addition you will be computer literate, have the abilty to study and gain further qualifications and a holder of a driving licence.

You will be a confident communicator, able to work alone, be an effective team player and have the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Due to the requirements of the role, it is necessary that applicants currently reside within 5 miles of the Port or are prepared to relocate within a reasonable timescale. The Port will contribute to the moving expenses.

Vacancy for Port Maintenance Supervisor/Electrician  

We are looking to recruit an experienced Supervisor/Electrician to ensure all port facilities are adequately maintained and to supervise the daily operations of the port maintenance team.

The role will also include electrical works including new installations, fault finding and upgrades.

We are seeking an experienced team supervisor who has excellent communication, planning and organisational skills. You must also hold a recognised Electrician qualification

This is a very varied role of which the key tasks and responsibilities include:

Supervisory Role

  • The liaison between the Port Engineer and the workforce
  • Organise workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
  • Coordinate all activity to ensure that works are carried out in a timely manner and within Health and Safety guidelines
  • Prepare scope of works for external contractors
  • Prepare the annual budget for maintenance and in-house works
  • Supervise the purchasing of materials including sourcing suppliers and obtaining quotations
  • Plan and coordinate team training requirements
  • Communicate Company information from the management team to all employees
  • Respond to staff complaints and resolve problems
  • Staff reporting to HR of sickness, absence and annual leave
  • Ensure all records are up to date; maintenance, servicing, fault reporting log etc
  • Be part of the Emergency Response Team
  • Electrician's Role
  • Assist in the maintenance of all electrics on the port including marine, property, and company equipment
  • Carry out supply upgrade - single and three-phase
  • Install new supply
  • Carry out all repairs; scheduled and unscheduled

Due to the nature of the role you will also be required to work at height, near water and lone working.

Working Pattern

Your standard working hours will be from Monday to Thursday 8.00am to 4pm and Friday 8am – 1pm

In addition, following a successful probationary period, you will be required to be available to work ‘on call’ on a rostered basis which will include weekends (vehicle supplied) in order to support the Port which operates 24/7.

All call outs and overtime will be paid at overtime rates in addition to your standard salary.

Due to the ‘on call’ requirement of the role, it is necessary that applicants currently reside within 5 miles of the Port or are prepared to relocate within a reasonable timescale. The Port will contribute to the moving expenses
